A worn seal doesn't always look broken — but it's costing you time and energy every time you bake.
If dishes are consistently taking longer to cook than a recipe suggests, and your oven's temperature otherwise seems accurate, heat escaping around the door is a common culprit. A worn seal lets warm air leak out continuously, which the oven compensates for by running longer.
The rubber or fiberglass gasket around the door frame should sit snugly against the door when closed. Cracking, flattening, or any place where you can see daylight (or feel airflow) between the door and frame when it's shut are clear signs it's due for replacement.
If the area around your oven door feels noticeably hot to the touch during baking, or you notice condensation forming on nearby cabinets, that's often heat escaping through a seal that's no longer sitting flush.
A leaking door seal makes the oven work harder to hold temperature, which shows up as higher energy use over time — usually a secondary sign that shows up alongside the others rather than a standalone diagnostic.
