Broiler Works But the Oven Won't Bake: What That Means

One element working and the other dead is a useful clue, not a mystery.

Two elements, two separate circuits

A conventional electric oven has a bake element at the bottom and a broil element at the top. They're controlled separately, so one can fail completely while the other keeps working normally. That's why the oven still browns the top of a dish under broil but never comes up to temperature for baking.

The most common cause: the element itself

Bake elements do more total work than broil elements in most households, so they tend to fail first. A failed element sometimes shows a visible break, blister, or burned spot — but plenty of them fail internally and look perfectly intact. Testing for continuity is what confirms it.

The second suspect: the relay on the control board

Each element is switched by a relay. If the bake relay has failed, the element never receives power even though the element itself is fine. The symptom is identical from the outside, which is why swapping in a new element without testing first is a common way to spend money and still have a cold oven.

How a technician tells them apart

Checking the element for continuity and then checking whether voltage is actually reaching its terminals when bake is selected separates the two cases quickly. Element good but no voltage arriving points upstream to the relay or the wiring; no continuity in the element points at the element.

On a gas oven, the same symptom means something different

If your oven is gas, a bake function that won't heat while the broiler still lights usually involves the bake igniter rather than an electric element. Gas components sit on the fuel side of the appliance, and that work belongs with a licensed technician — if you ever smell gas, stop using the oven and call a professional.

Is it worth repairing?

A bake element replacement is one of the more affordable oven repairs. A control board is a bigger job, and on an older oven it's worth a direct conversation about repair versus replacement before parts are ordered. Our guide to what drives electric oven repair pricing covers how those two paths differ.

What not to do while you wait

Using the broiler as a substitute for baking tends to burn the top of food before the middle cooks, and running an oven with a known fault doesn't help anything. If the oven is also tripping the breaker, leave the circuit off until it's been diagnosed.

Can I tell if the element is bad just by looking?
Sometimes — a visible break or burn is conclusive. But many failed elements look normal, so a clean-looking element doesn't rule it out.
